HANOVER, N.H. - Freshman Christian Morisette, a former Lac St Louis Tiger, (Beaconsfield, PQ) redirected a shot from the point for his first career goal as the Rensselaer men's hockey team defeated Dartmouth, 3-2, in overtime. With the win, the Engineers improve to 8-25-2 and take a 1-0 lead in best-of-three series with the Big Green, who fall to 14-13-3.
Morissette crashed the net in front of a shot from the left point by sophomore defensman Jeff Foss (Moorhead, MN) and tipped the puck past Dartmouth freshman netminder Jody O'Neill (Nepean, ON) for the game-winning goal, 7:49 into overtime.
RPI freshman Jordan Watts (Oakville, ON) netted his first career tally a period earlier, which knotted the game at two apiece, 2:13 into the third period. Sophomores Joel Malchuk (Brandon, MB) and Foss earned the helpers.
Dartmouth got on the board first, when sophomore Scott Fleming (Plainfield, ON) took a pass from classmate Adam Escolet (Orono, MN) and beat RPI rookie goal Allen York (Wetaskiwin, AB) for the 1-0 lead, just under four minutes into the game.
The Engineers evened the game at 1-1, at 13:33 of the opening frame. Senior Seth Klerer (Thornhill, ON) scored his sixth of the season from classmate Andrei Uryadov (St. Petersburg, Russia) and junior Erik Burgdoerfer (East Setauket, NY) picked up the assists.
Fleming's second goal of the game and 13th of the year, reclaimed the lead (2-1) for the Big Green at 7:09 of the second period. Assists on the go-ahead goal went to Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, BC) and O'Neill.
York (3-8-0) made 31 saves to earn the victory in his first career ECACH playoff game, while O'Neill (14-12-3) made 33 stops.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday evening (7pm). Game three, if necessary, will be played on Sunday (7pm).
